Before you study for WAPS: build the right reference list

Match your PFE study materials to your promotion cycle and keep specialty testing references separate.

By ·

Before adding more practice questions to your routine, check that you are studying the right material. A well-organized reference list helps you avoid spending a week on an outdated edition or assuming that one general study app covers every part of your promotion preparation.

Write down what you are preparing for

Start a note with your promotion cycle, the grade you are testing for, and the testing information provided through your unit. Keep the Promotion Fitness Examination (PFE) and any applicable specialty testing requirements as separate entries. If your situation or eligibility is unclear, resolve it through your unit’s testing or personnel channels before building the plan.

Use the official study guide as your starting point

The Air Force’s enlisted promotion study-guide website provides official study materials. Go there directly, choose the material appropriate to your grade and cycle, and record its title and date. If you saved a PDF months ago, compare it with the currently listed material before relying on it.

For specialty preparation, confirm the applicable references through the official channels identified for your cycle. Promotion Ready Air Force focuses on PFE preparation; do not assume its handbook material replaces your required specialty references.

Create a reference checklist you can maintain

  • Reference: the exact guide or document title.
  • Edition: the date or version shown on the official document.
  • Scope: the chapters or sections relevant to your preparation, confirmed against current guidance.
  • Progress: what you have read, practiced and still need to revisit.
  • Open question: anything you need to confirm with your testing office or supervisor.

This checklist can live in an ordinary note. It is a planning aid, not a claimed feature inside the app.

Connect reading, recall and practice

For a short study session, choose one section from your verified list. Read it, put the material away, and explain its main points from memory. Use flashcards or practice questions to identify gaps, then return to the source for the explanation. A correct guess should still go on your review list if you cannot explain why it is correct.

For example, a hypothetical evening session might include ten minutes of reading, five minutes of recall and ten minutes reviewing questions. Adjust those amounts to your schedule. The useful result is a clearer understanding of the topic, not an arbitrary question count.

Recheck when guidance changes

Keep a dated reference list and update it when official materials change. Promotion Ready Air Force brings handbook study, flashcards and practice tests together on iPhone, iPad and Android. Use those tools to support your verified plan; the app does not replace official promotion guidance or promise a promotion outcome.

When two copies disagree, compare their identity first

A file saved under a newer filename is not necessarily a newer official reference. Put the two copies side by side and record the title, date printed inside the document, intended grade or cycle, and the official location where each was obtained. A download date answers when you saved it, not whether it applies to your test.

Use a short decision note. If both copies are the same edition but have different page numbering, compare the section heading and paragraph text. If they are different editions, check which one the current official reference list identifies for your situation. If the applicable list itself is unclear, take that precise question to your testing channel before replacing all your notes.

For a hypothetical example, a partner shares a file labeled “new PFE guide,” while your saved copy has a clear edition date. Instead of choosing the newer-looking filename, identify the document inside and its listed scope. Keep the unverified file separate until you can establish what it is. This example does not select a particular edition or chapter for any promotion cycle.

Once resolved, record why you kept one copy, update the references attached to affected notes, and remove the superseded copy from your active study folder. Preserve it separately if you need to understand older notes. The aim is one clearly identified working reference, with unresolved differences visible rather than silently blended together.

Promotion Ready Air Force is an independent study aid, not an official Air Force publication or an endorsed testing program.
